Science Illustrator Patricia Ferrer Beals received a dual degree in Graphic Communications (BFA) and Biology (BA) from Washington University in St. Louis. She received her M.F.A. in Medical & Biological Illustration from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. As a Biomedical Illustrator, she’s taught numerous undergrad and graduate level classes at the University of Michigan Art School, including multiple, international, accredited field-sketching courses from Costa Rica to Southern Africa. She spent 3 years at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum as the Interactive Media Coordinator developing science related educational programs for children. While at AAHOM, Patricia created original content and science illustration used in touch-screen kiosks, websites, and printed materials. From there, she went on to a full-time, four year appointment with the Education Team at the University of Michigan’s Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichol’s Arboretum, as Interpretation and Exhibit Coordinator, and Botanical Illustrator. There she specialized in graphic design, content creation, and botanical illustration for seasonal and permanent exhibits.
As a freelance Science Illustrator, Patricia’s work has been featured in numerous solo and juried exhibits. She’s experienced in surgical, botanical, educational, ichthyological, ornithological, and web-based science illustration. Past clients have included universities, science museums, hospitals, and publishing houses.
